Your Day in Paw Paw

You can start your day with breakfast at Café 237,  Copper Grille, Grapevine Grill, or just drop in for a cup of coffee and a pastry at Greg’s Paw Paw Blend Coffee Shop. Then take the kids to Tyler Field/Kids Paradise Adventure Playground for some playtime and exercise.  Bring your own lunch or grab something from one of the restaurants in town or from one of many fast-food places along Kalamazoo Street/M-40 and head over to Maple Island, Sunset Park or just sit at Lake Front Park.  All have beautiful shaded or sunny seating at tables or on the grass.  Children love the playground on Maple Island.  Maple Island, Lake Front Park and Tyler Field all have public restrooms.

If a picnic isn’t your style stop at Red’s Root Beer Stand for that old fashioned drive-In eating experience or pop into The Sugar Bear and experience an old fashioned ice cream parlor that also offers great food.

As your day continues, the Strand Movie Theatre offers terrific movies which children of all ages enjoy.

When your day is done, have a relaxing drive or walk home and recount the memories your family created in Paw Paw.

  • Parking on the street or in public lots is always free in Paw Paw.

Paddling enthusiasts can arrive in Paw Paw for a day of canoeing or kayaking on Maple Lake or up and down the Paw Paw River. The Paw Paw water trail launch is on the north side of the dam on Power Plant Road and parking is available nearby. A water trail is a network of launching and landing sites that allows non-motorized small boat users to better enjoy the historic, scenic, cultural, and environmental richness of the Paw Paw River. The trail provides recreational and natural experiences for visitors.    http://www.michiganwatertrails.org/trail.asp?ait=cv&cid=154

You can put into Maple Lake at the Sunset Park boat launch on the north end of the island or at the south end at Lake Front Park.  From either, you will be able to paddle the 172 acre MapleLake.   Take a break from paddling and enjoy a picnic on Maple Island, Sunset Park (boat Launch), or Lake Front Park.  Maple Island has 19 picnic sites with tables, most with grills, and all with waste barrels. Some picnic sites are sheltered and some are open air; some are shaded and some in full sun.

For a trip up river, park in the Village lot on West Michigan Avenue and launch your canoe or kayak into Briggs Pond.  Paddling around Briggs Pond is beautiful and it is an easy paddle up the Paw Paw River.

For a trip down river, put your canoe or kayak in on the north side of the dam on Power Plant Road/51st Avenue.  The Paw Paw Area Rotary Club installed steps and a launch so you can easily carry your canoe or kayak to the Paw Paw River for a little more challenging paddle down river.

While you are paddling around, remember there are public restrooms at Lake Front Park, Maple Island and port a johns at the boat launch.

When your paddling day is done, there are great places to refresh yourself with dinner and beverages in Paw Paw.

Take the tour at St. Julian where you will learn about the history and Italian roots of St. Julian Wines as well as see the winemaking  process and taste the wine, sparkling juice, vodka and brandy.

Wander across the street from St. Julian’s to Paw Paw Brewing Company to witness the brewing of their special brew pub beers.
